In my quest to go more natural, chemical free I made my own dryer sheets this morning! I’ve been slowly weeding out chemical laced products from our bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room. There are plenty of great reasons to ditch the store bought dryer sheets.
Just a few of the many toxins found in commercial dryer sheets & liquid fabric softener.
(and remember the fragrance clings to our clothes, and you wear and absorb the chemicals 365 days a year.)
Alpha-Terpineol – can cause headaches, loss of muscle control, central nervous system damage, & respiratory problems.
Benzyl Acetate- Has been linked to pancreatic cancer.
Benzyl Alcohol- respiratory tract irritant, central nervous system depressant, & death.
Biodegradable Cationic Softeners- (used to make clothes fluffy and free of static) These toxins build up in the body over time & can damage the central nervous system.
Camphor- causes central nervous system disorders, confusion, and is easily absorbed through the skin.
Chloroform- carcinogenic neurotoxin
Dichlorobenzene- a very carcinogenic solvent used to make paint thinners.
Ethanol- on the EPA’s “hazardous waste list.”
Ethyl Acetate- A narcotic on the EPA’s “hazardous waste list.”
Linalool- causes central nervous system disorders, reduced spontaneous motor activity, & depresses heart activity.
Limonene- a known carcinogen that irritates eyes and skin
Pentane- harmful if inhaled. Can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness. It is also a central nervous system depressant.
That isn’t even the list of fragrance chemicals found in them!
I made my own this morning with 2 ingredients & I really liked using them.
(Believe me I am a sucker for soft clothes that smell good and have no static electricity (especially while living in a desert with little humidity!)
All you need is some fabric scraps (colors that won’t bleed!)
vinegar, your favorite essential oil, and a mason jar.
I bought quilt squares at hobby lobby. They were $9.99 then I used the 40% off coupon on the Hobby Lobby iPhone app.
I cut them into 11 X 6 inch rectangles & folded them.
Pour 1/2 c. vinegar into mason jar & 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil.
(we really like lavender or jasmine.)
Place the folded fabric in the jar, seal it shut, and shake it.
I place one in the dryer with each load. When I use them all I will just refill the jar. Our towels and clothes came out fluffy, soft, and they didn’t smell like vinegar. (That’s a smell I don’t like personally!)
There’s a few positives from doing this! I don’t miss the chemicals. (After all, our skin is our largest organ!) It is eco-friendly, we’re not contribuing to toxins in the air through the dryer vent anymore with commercial brand dryer sheets, and they are reusable!
